Work Starts on New Sports Hall

Waterwells Sports Centre at Quedgeley was provided to improve sports facilities for local residents several years ago with the help of the Parish Council, Quedgeley Wanderers FC and Gloucester City Council. It started off with four football pitches and changing rooms and a couple of years ago an all weather, floodlit multi-use synthetic pitch was built. Then last year the City Council installed a large playground and now the site is one of the best sports and recreation centres in the county.

The Chairman of the Parish Council’s Sports and Recreation Committee, Julian Powell, says “We are always looking at ways in which we can improve the facilities and working with Quedgeley Wanderers it was agreed that a Sports Hall would be a valuable addition”. In this time of recession this was a rather challenging project but with the help of a donation of £250k from the Robin Greaves Sport Foundation, Gloucestershire Environmental Trust with landfill tax contributions of £35k from Cory Environmental, £10k from Summerfield Charitable Trust, £5k from Garfield Weston and other contributions from the Parish Council, the City Council, Quedgeley Wanderers FC and the Gloucester Old Spot work will start on the 19th March. Thanks are also due to Crest Nicholson who provided the land under a planning agreement and have allowed the building of the hall on what is public open space.

Terry Cawkwell, Chairman of Quedgeley Wanderers says “The Sports Hall will bring great benefit to the local community that has only come about through the commitment and determination of Quedgeley Parish Councillors and staff, Cllr Debbie Llewelyn and members of our club. It just goes to show what a community can achieve when it works together”.

The building has been designed and constructed by Kilbury Construction Limited, who are based in the area and have been liaising closely with all of those involved. It is expected that construction will be completed by the middle of September, this year, and the sports hall, meeting room and kitchen will then be available for hire.

Anna Mozol, Chair of the Parish Council says “We are extremely proud of what has been achieved up until now at a sports centre that is the envy of most other parish councils and the latest facility can only support this and I am sure will prove to be very popular”.
